Energy balance is a balance between energy coming in and energy going out. It describes the balance between energy intake from a diet and energy expenditure.
The three macronutrients (carbohydrate, fat and protein) contain energy and thus contribute to energy intake. Energy expenditure is mediated by physical activity, basal metabolic rate etc.
When energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, a person is considered to be in a state of positive energy balance. The excess energy is stored in the body mainly in form of body fat.
On the contrary, when energy expenditure exceeds energy intake, energy is used by body, resulting in a decrease in fat stores. Now, we talk about negative energy balance.
WHY YOU SHOUD KNOW ENERGY BALANCE?
If you want to lose your weight you should be in state of negative energy balance. If you want to gain weight, you should be in positive energy balance. In both cases there are two ways.
In the case of a positive energy balance, you can:
- either lie on the couch and eat
- or exercise and eat a lot.
I hope you choose the second option, in which you gain muscle mass especially (if you will have well establlished diet plan). In the first case you gain only fat.
In the case of a negative energy balance, you can:
- either lie on the coach and not eat
- or exercise and eat as well
Again I hope you choose the second option, in which you maintain muscle mass (or gain new one) and lose an amount of body fat. In the first case you get slow your basal metabolic rate and possible weight losses coming from muscle mass.
